about known heart counseling, LLC

Known Heart Counseling, LLC was founded by Emma Keefe, Professional Counselor Associate in February 2024. The company was born out of Emma’s passion for connecting with others, as well as her deep desire to help others better connect with themselves.

•••

Emma’s counseling work is guided by the view that dedicating time and space to understanding one’s own nature leads to discovering an agency that lessens the experience of suffering for oneself, others, and the world. Known Heart Counseling hopes to help clients get to know themselves and illuminate that they are, and forever will be, their own most precious gift.

•••

Emma is a member of the mixed-race POC, queer and polyamorous community, and she is dedicated to providing gender-affirming and anti-racist care. As a white-passing woman raised in the United States, Emma understands the responsibility she has to unlearn and eradicate characteristics of white supremacy from her formal education and her counseling work.

services offered

Known Heart Counseling, LLC is committed to providing accessible mental health services for adults (ages 18+) residing in Oregon.

Individual Therapy

Emma brings compassion, enthusiasm, and humor to her individual counseling sessions through an earnest curiosity about what it is like to experience the world through her clients’ bodies and minds. Emma’s warmth and ability to hold difficult emotions creates a nonjudgmental environment that allows clients to show up as their authentic selves, without fear of being met with judgment or shame. Throughout this process, clients begin to grow their tolerance and tenderness toward past and current experiences of suffering, leading them to cultivate the kind of love and bravery it takes to try something new.

Couples Therapy

Creating and maintaining mutually empathetic, authentic and empowering relationships with others is at the heart of living well, and Emma centers the development of these kinds of relationships in her couples work. Emma slows couples down by helping them notice and name what happens in their bodies and minds when moments of disconnection occur, which leads to a greater understanding of what can help return the couple to a state of safety and connection. Emma also emphasizes the importance of noticing and nourishing moments of connection, and helps couples clients recognize how they can better savor the experience of being in relationship with one another.

In-person Sessions

Emma offers individual and couples sessions in-person on Saturdays between 8:30am and 6:30pm in Beaverton, OR.

In-person appointments are extremely limited, and are only available on a first-come first-serve basis.

virtual Sessions

Emma offers individual and couples sessions virtually on Tuesdays – Thursdays.

theoretical orientations

Emma incorporates three main theories into both her individual and couples counseling work:

Buddhist Psychology

Buddhist thought is incredibly complex. But at its core, it encourages humans to learn how to slow down with themselves and their experiences, compassionately. Emma brings an orientation of Buddhist thought into the counseling space by modeling how her clients may begin to examine their suffering more gently and with more equanimity – a skill that enables one to witness and accept their own suffering, without being overcome by it. Themes of attachment, aversion, impermanence, and an ever-changing “self” will most likely surface in your work with Emma, regardless of the symptoms you present with.

Relational-Cultural Therapy

Relational-Cultural Therapy (RCT) is rooted in the understanding that humans need one another to survive. Thus, RCT values and prioritizes the concept of interconnectedness over the Western-European goal of hyper-individualism and self-sufficiency. Emma incorporates this RCT principle into her counseling work through helping clients explore the quality of their relational experiences, both past and present, and determine the ways in which these relational experiences impact how clients interact with themselves and the world today.

Polyvagal Theory

Emma integrates the body into her counseling work through application of the Polyvagal Theory, which emphasizes how influential one’s autonomic state is to their experience of themselves and the world. As clients discover what each autonomic state feels like, they begin to learn how to listen to what their body might be telling them, instead of getting lost in the experience of the autonomic state itself. Through this exploration, clients develop compassion for the ways in which their nervous systems have kept themselves safe in the past, and move forward better equipped to help their bodies try something different.
